A Watch is the single most important accessory that is worn by any person. The watch stands for a whole lot of things. It represents the person’s, character, personality, taste, interest area, and last but not the least, gives a fair idea of his/her financial status.

The contemporary watch

The design of contemporary watches can range from the ultra-modern to the classic and from fun to chic, and everything in between. It comes as no surprise that there is a watch for every occasion. Moreover, more and more companies are coming out with watches that suit the different moods of a person.

There are special watches that can be used while embarking on a particular activity, like deep sea diving, mountain climbing etc. On the whole there is an innumerable choice out there which specifically caters to the different and continuously changing tastes of the people.

Difficulty in choosing

Choosing a watch for your needs is a difficult process, so imagine what choosing a watch for somebody else might mean. It’s a pleasant headache if not anything else, as what you select might not be the choice of the person whom you select if for.

Your choice is after all your own choice, and will have no bearing on the personal taste of another. So what is the right watch for you? How do you select a good watch? Here are a few tips that might just help you decide. Read on.

The need

You must thoroughly analyze what you need the watch for. Answer questions like: Do I need the watch for regular use? Do I want it for a special activity? Do I want one for special occasions? Where and when am I going to use it? Etc.

This is the first factor that would dictate your choice of the watch.

The purpose

The purpose of the watch is of paramount importance. You might be surprised with this tip, but the fact of the matter is that people, these days, don’t just buy a watch to keep track of the time.

They use it like an accessory and a thing of beauty. For them, time is just one aspect, but more importance is given to the fact, whether the watch will complement their attire or appearance.

The features

So what are the definitive features that you are looking for in the watch? Is it a great design? Do you want a luminous dial or a simple one? Do you want a watch, where a date is shown as well as time? Do you want it to show, specialized features like altitude height, depth etc.

All watches have certain key features, which are common across all watches. However, if you want some exclusive features, then your can pick those that have a certain amount of style, and have a classic, romantic, or a futuristic range of features.

The watch face

It’s the face of the watch, which is the deciding factor, when you buy a watch. The face of the watch must be such that, its size is commensurate with the wrist size of the person who is going to wear it.

For e.g. if your hand has a big wrist, and you select a watch with a small face, it will look ungainly and supremely inelegant.

The safest bet for males is a big watch face, while for females it is a small watch face.

The strap

Many a times, people don’t put too much of an importance on the strap of the watch. However, it might be a good idea to give due thought to the strap. Some straps don’t gel together with the watch, or might not complement the overall skin tone and color. They look out of place.

The best bet has always been a stainless steep strap. It is durable and looks good. Another option is a leather strap; however, it’s not suitable for all occasions.

The price

Watches come in a whole dynamic range of prices. They can suit the constraints of each and every pocket. Exclusive watches are expensive, and there is quite a lot of snob value attached to them.

It’s advisable not to go overboard, when you buy a watch and you must spend well within your means. Some watches have a good re-sale value. Make a bee-line for such watches as even if you want to change them after a couple of years, you can sell them at a fair price.

Resistance to water

Almost all watches, these days, are water resistant. This is really an important consideration, as there will be numerous instances of your watch being brought into contact with water.

Make sure to ask the vendor, about the degree of resistance to water. For many watch makers, the term “water-resistant” means different things.

You won’t go wrong if you consider the above tips, while buying a watch. A word of caution here: Steer clear of impulse buying, while buying a watch.

The popularity of the internet has made buying and selling of various items as easy as clicking the computer mouse. Most transactions are completed in just a matter of minutes or seconds, depending on the speed of your internet connection.

People used to go from one store to another to choose watches for themselves or for their loved ones. Today, choosing a watch can be easily achieved just by looking at the different catalogues offered by various websites selling different kinds of watch.

Buying a watch online can be easy but it can be quite tricky considering that you are only choosing from photographs without ever touching the watch or knowing how it looks on your hands. People who do not have the time to go from one store to another however believe that getting their watch online can save them time and money.

When choosing a watch online, do not just be tempted to choose one that looks good on the net. Make sure that you know the details of the watch like the price, the warranty and the quality of the watch. It is also important to take note of the shipping services offered by the company selling the watch online.

It is hard to choose from among the hundreds of watch photos displayed on different websites. However, you should limit your choice to the watch that meets your budget. It is not wise to go overboard when choosing a watch online. Thus, you must always have a ceiling price for your budget.

Why waste your time looking at the website for watches that costs an arm and a leg? Be realistic and go directly to watch catalogues that have more affordable prices.

You can start by looking at the photos of different kinds of watch in the interne t and check them out when you are visiting the malls. This way, you are able to see the quality of the watch physically. Make sure you get the right model when doing your research so you can compare it to the real thing when going shopping.

When you have decided on the type of watch you like and you have examined a similar model in the shops, then you can buy the watch online. However, you have to make sure that you are getting the exact model and that the online dealer offers a warranty for the watch.

Choosing a reputable online watch dealer is a must if you do not want to be shortchanged. Shopping for a watch online can make the job easier but you also have to be vigilant about the reputation of the dealer and the type of watch you are buying.

Women’s watches are exciting to watch and to wear. The latest top watches to arrive on the market are found on the internet. Access to the internet means you don’t have to live in a large population center in order to have the latest and best fashion accessories and jewelry. The exciting thing about the new watches is that they come in every possible style and color to appeal to every woman’s lifestyle.

Pierre Nicol Floral Collection

Even in the depths of winter, fashion watches from the series can make you think of spring. The women’s watches feature a bezel design enamel silver case in a charming floral motif. The vibrant color of the flowers and vines that surround the face of the watch matches the color of the extra large easy to read dial. Choices of color include Hot Pink, Pumpkin, pale blue, and five other fashion hues. The movement is precise quartz and the band is wide, solid bracelet style with decorative floral matching the face. This is a watch that is a fashion statement as well as a time piece and any woman in a lighthearted mood would be thrilled to own it. Look for Pierre Nicol PN188-1251 in your favorite color.

Swiss Legend Eleganza

The Swiss Legend Eleganza for women features a black leather strap with a crocodile finish. The fastener has push button deployment. The stainless steel case is set with 116 white diamonds in a full cut. These diamonds weigh in at 2.64 carats with excellent clarity and a color grade H. The movement is Swiss quartz. The dial is textured black with silver hands. The numerals are in an Arabesque style. The diamonds are set in a bezel style with a double row along each side of the face and a single row at top and bottom of the face. For a classy design to wear at the most fashion conscious occasions, choose this bold, yet elegant watch.

Accutron

The accuracy of this brand continues to be popular among men and women alike. The Versailles Gold-tone stainless steel women’s watch features a Swiss quartz movement with a sapphire crystal. The bracelet style of the band makes it dressy enough to wear with a business ensemble yet functional enough to wear to a coach your child’s Little League team. The face of the watch is made of white mother of pearl. The hands and the numeral and stick markers are of gold tone. The watch is water resistant which can be important to anyone who loves water sports. Of course the accuracy of this brand name is built into the name itself.

Technomarine

For a truly unusual watch, you must see the women’s Maori Diamond Black Rubber timepiece. The watch face is an offset triangle in a bezel setting. The watch face is silver and features the Maori tattoo. The tattoo is repeated in the black rubber band. 56 white diamonds accent the case with a combined diamond weight of 1.19 carats. Swiss made quartz movement with a sapphire crystal guarantees accuracy and dependability.

This is not a watch to be hidden under a long sleeve. It deserves to be flaunted both for its beauty and its unique design.

Cartier

A Cartier timepiece is a luxury item. It is a recognized status symbol for every women who owns one. An example is the Cartier Women’s Tankissime Solid 18 K Gold watch. It is a slightly rectangular watch with roman numerals on a silver grained dial. The bold links in the bracelet are the same width as the case and are fastened by a hidden clasp. There is nothing retiring about the 18 carat gold, yet the design is so clean and understated that the watch would make a lovely accessory to almost any classical style garment.

Rolex

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Lady Datejust 18kt Gold Ladies Watch speaks with quiet elegance. The case and bracelet are made of 18 carat yellow gold. The watch face is set in a fluted gold bezel design. The champagne dial is marked with Roman numerals. Quality is built into the 31 jeweled synthetic sapphire crystals. The bracelet is formed in the style known as President. The watch is a Rolex which almost speaks for itself in name recognition. The classic lines of this and other Rolex watches can be a welcome accessory with almost any type of ensemble from tennis dress to riding habit.

No matter what type of lifestyle you lead, choosing a women’s timepiece that appeals to you is easy when you use the internet to narrow the selections. Think beyond the mundane and have fun with a new women’s watch in one of the latest styles. You can expand your horizons in style by choosing something that’s new and different from your usual look.

For some reason, sports or fitness watches are usually large and have a rugged appearance. Even a woman’s sports watch is typically more utilitarian in appearance than a more formal dress style timepiece. Probably the first and foremost consideration when selecting a sports watch is understanding what the purpose of the watch is. You may say that the purpose of choosing a sports watch is because you participate in sports, but that doesn’t necessarily mandate a particular type of watch. In fact, those who participate in the sport of tennis may prefer a watch that appears more like a bracelet than a utilitarian timepiece.

Size

A sports watch will usually be somewhat larger than watches intended for more formal occasions, however, watches in general have grown larger over the past few years. Choosing a sport watch that is not large enough on the face of the watch to easily place and read all the features is a waste of money. At the same time, choosing a large bulky watch can interfere with playing some sports, and can even be dangerous to the player in others. Catching parts of the watch on other objects is hard on the watch and may cause injury to the wearer as well.

Dial

The dial should be large enough to easily read the numbers and view the placement of the hands. A luminous dial is helpful in some situations. Placement of the hands or the digital readout should be done with readability in mind. If there are other features on the face of the watch, they should be intuitively placed and easily seen. Hands versus display are a matter of personal preference.

Water resistance

Obviously divers, swimmers or those who work in moist weather conditions will want to review the water resistance level in the watch options they are considering. If you are a diver, keep in mind that most sports watches are water resistant to some degree, but you shouldn’t assume that a 50 meter depth watch will be okay at 49 meters.

Materials

Almost all sports watches are made of either stainless steel or titanium. Hardened titanium is beautiful and durable as is stainless steel and much less expensive than watches made of precious metals such as gold or platinum. Gold is easily scratched so would be less desirable for a sports watch. Stainless steel is the preferred choice for most sports watches.

Band composition

The composition of the band typically is metal, leather or synthetic material of some type, such as plastic. You should look for a band that fits your wrist correctly, no matter what the style of the sports watch is or what the composition is. Any watch that is too lose will tend to catch on objects while the wearer is active. A watch band that is too snug will never be comfortable to wear and will tend to rub or chafe the skin of an active wearer.

Crystals

The watch crystal is generally not an option on a sports watch or any other. You will find the harder the substance the better quality the crystal. Synthetic sapphire is the typical choice, as they are next to diamonds in the hardness scale. Less expensive watches will typically use mineral glass or even plastic. Mineral glass is coated so as to make it more resistant to scratching.

Weight

The weight of a watch for an active sports enthusiast can become critical. If you are wearing a watch that weighs above 100 grams you will begin to feel the weight of the watch on your wrist. Unfortunately, not all watch manufacturers provide information on the weight of the watch in the specifications.

Quartz vs mechanical

The decision about whether a quartz or mechanical watch is preferable to you is going to be linked to the price you are prepared to spend on the watch. Lower priced and lower quality watches typically will have a quartz movement while higher quality and higher priced watches will nearly always have mechanical movements. The exception may be where the case of the watch is made of a precious metal.

Extras

Some add ons include a stop watch, a calendar and clocks from other time zones or alarms for example, but these items are simply personal preference items.

In summary, finding the perfect sports or fitness watch is a matter of determining how the watch will be used and how it will look and feel on your wrist. Checking the quality level of the watch will be critical unless you are planning to replace the watch periodically. Finally, price of the watch will be an important factor in choosing the ideal sports watch. You may want to think about looking for as quality watch that has been cared for if you want the best quality for the price, but you lose some assurance of the condition of the watch in this instance.

Whatever Happened to Winding?

Depending on your age, you may or may not remember seeing your father wind his watch each night before going to bed. If he did not, he would surely wake to a watch that had stopped. Those days became history with the advent of the automatic watch. What makes it automatic? It still has the same basic mechanism to keep the watch working, but how that mechanism is powered changed the way we cared for our watches.

All mechanical watches work in a similar manner. They require a movement of a series of gears to “tick” of increments of time, which in turn registers as movements of the hands on the face of the watch. A rotor in the watch sits on a staff in the middle of the watch’s movement. It rotates in a circular motion and winds the mainspring which is the source of power in mechanical watches. With an automatic watch the winding of this spiral spring is done automatically with any arm or wrist movement.

Self-winding, automatic watches work great for people who wear the watch each day, but if you do not wear the watch frequently, it needs manual winding about twice a week. Even automatic watches will stay working better if they are wound manually about once every two weeks because this helps keep the watch lubricated. It is a misconception that automatic watches never need any winding, since it all depends on the movement of the arm to keep it functioning well.

A power reserve lets the movement of your watch keep time for anywhere between 10 and 72 hours. There is something called a power reserve, and the bigger the reserve, the longer your automatic watch will keep running without further movement or manual winding.

Rolex was the first watch manufacturer to devise and patent the rotor system that is still used today. They called it the Perpetual and it was part of the popular Oyster line created in the early 1930s. Emile Borer was the Rolex technician who came up with the system, but he was not the first to develop a rotor. That distinction goes to Swiss watchmaker, Abraham-Louis Perrelet as long ago as 1770. This was quite the invention because it wouldn’t be until much later in time that wrist watches were worn and there just wasn’t enough physical movement with a pocket watch to make it a feasible way to move the rotor and wind the mainspring.

Automatic watches differ from quartz watches which are powered by batteries and not by either a manual or automatic winding system. Powered by a battery, the quartz crystal inside a quartz watch vibrates nearly 33,000 times per. Watch batteries last about two years, where automatic watches have a never ending source of power: movement or motion.

Quartz watches account for most moderately priced watch sales today, but connoisseurs of watches still like the prestige and elegance of a finely crafted mechanical watch. Automatics have started to regain some of the quartz market in recent years accounting for huge increases (95%) in sales between 1993 and 1995.

Lubrication is essential to keeping an automatic watch running well. Watches can be lubricated by manually winding the watch periodically and taking it in to a jeweler once about every 3 to 5 years. When winding an automatic watch, just wind it about 30 to 40 times or until you feel some resistance. Keeping the watch is a watch winding box is also a good way to keep the watch lubricated.

Automatic watches are also quite affordable. They actually come in every price range. Some economical brands include Invicta watch and Orient watch, and then the price can reach into the very expensive range depending on the embellishments or the prestige of a specific brand.

I’m looking to buy a new men’s Invicta watch in the near future. This post will cover the criteria I use before I make any purchases on Ebay.

Note: I choose buy an Invicta watch because I like the modern styling as well as they offer watches that fit my pricing budget. They have a very nice selection of Invicta dive watches.

I always start out on Ebay by looking over various listings, pick out the ones that interest me, and put them in the ”Items I’m Watching”. I then check the sellers feedback. I look at the amount of feedback as well as the negative feedback. I’ll also browse around and look at the types of feedback comments the seller receives.

I they have negative feedback, read the comments and see if you find a trend. If there is one then you should avoid buying from the seller. I also check the positive feedback to look for any patterns. Some buyers may leave positive feedback, but they might comment on how the item was shipped, packed, or how long the shipping process actually took. Others complaints might be about the cost of shipping or the condition of the item.

Check the description and the shipping costs. See if the item is new or has been refurbished. You can also look if it comes in a retail box or not.

Make sure what the shipping cost is, a watch usually weighs less than two pounds, so shipping should not be excessive. Look where the seller is located. Some watch sellers are located overseas, so shipping will be a lot more or the product could get lost.

I sometimes like to ask the seller a question about the item. the response and how long it takes tells me if the seller might be too busy to help me if I have a problem with my order.

I always use PayPal for payments. PayPal offers buyer protection as well as making your payment easier.

You can apply these tips to any item you want to buy on Ebay, not just a men’s Invicta watch.
