Rolex was founded by a man named Hans Wilsdorf. Hans was born on the 22nd of March 1881 in a city called Kulmbach in Franconia Germany. After his parents passed away in 1893 Hans’ uncle put him into a boarding school. When Hans reached his early twenties he pursued his interests in travel, business and the all new “bracelet watch”. In the year of 1900, he got himself a job in watch exporting. When Hans turned twenty-four he decided that with all his knowledge and interest he wanted to open his own watch-making business, and that’s exactly what he did. In the time of his working, he went between Chaux-de-Fonds and London and then in the year of 1905 the company Wilsdorf & Davies was found in London. In the same year, they produced a “briefcase” watch made of leather. This watch was very popular and sold in many different styles and sizes.
When people thought that pocket watches were the greatest things around, Hans concentrated more on producing the new Rolex wristwatch. He then contracted with Hermann Aegler who was in Bienne at the time. Hans also got in touch with movements that had lever escapement and got them for a cheap price and very often went to a workshop in Biel where he purchased the certain movements he needed in bulk. It was exactly what he needed because the movements where perfect – accurate running and the accessibility of the equipment he needed was good. From the London office the watchmakers personally tested the pieces to make sure they were completely accurate before they were publicized on the shelves of stores. There were many more Rolex wristwatches produced after this and soon enough it was in fashion to wear a wristwatch on your arm.
Most of the earlier models of Rolex wristwatches that were manufactured were silver with a leather strap but not long after that gold watches were produced and then the fashionable flexible bracelet was launched in 1906. Hans wanted his own brand of watches and came up with the name “Rolex”. He chose this because it was short, easy and catchy. He wanted people to look into a shop window, see a beautiful watch and know it was a Rolex wristwatch. Unlike many other watchmakers, Hans decided he was not going to name his line of watches after himself, and he then made up the Rolex name.
Rolex wristwatches are now one of the leading watch brands in the world. What make these watches so popular are the time, effort and accuracy at which they are made. Many will say these are the most expensive watches they have come across, but it’s better to purchase something of excellent quality and know that it is going to last you a lifetime. There are hundreds of Rolex watches on the market today, different colors, styles and designs; some are even in a category for men and for women. These watches are so great because they look good and they last long, they are made with perfection and will not easily be ruined by moisture, dust or dirt. |
